Director Edward Zwick, who generally dabbles in heavy dramas and actioners (‘Glory,’ ‘Legends of the Fall,’ ‘The Siege,’ ‘Blood Diamond’) hasn’t done a romantic-comedy since 1986, when he teamed Demi Moore and Rob Lowe as lovers whose one-night stand turns into a budding relationship; the film followed their struggles with the ups and downs of romance and love.
Now, in ‘Love and Other Drugs,’ Zwick has teamed Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway as a pair of free spirits who meet cute and find themselves in a budding relationship; the film follows their struggles with the ups and downs of romance and love.
Ah, the rom-com. It’s still the same old story, a fight for love and glory, as the song (‘As Time Goes By’) says, and we never seem to tire of it.
The Fox film, which will hit theaters Nov. 24, is described thusly:
“Maggie (Hathaway) is an alluring free spirit who won’t let anyone — or anything — tie her down. But she meets her match in Jamie (Gyllenhaal), whose relentless and nearly infallible charm serve him well with the ladies and in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales. Maggie and Jamie’s evolving relationship takes them both by surprise, as they find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love.”
Kinda reminds us of ‘Up in the Air’ meets ‘Thank You for Smoking.’
Tired of the same old rom-com? Will Gyllenhaal and Hathaway breathe new life into the genre? Check out the trailer.
